Honeymoon safari
A safari for two: unhurried days, a private vehicle, small camps with space of your own and, for many couples, a slow finish on a Zanzibar beach.
A safari for two
A honeymoon safari is less about seeing everything and more about having time together in remarkable places. Fewer moves, longer stays, and evenings that end by a fire under a very large sky.
Most honeymoon routes combine two or three areas of the northern circuit with a beach stay on Zanzibar. That might mean the Ngorongoro Crater, a few nights in the Serengeti chosen for the season, and then the Indian Ocean.
Who it suits
Newlyweds, couples celebrating an anniversary, and anyone who wants a trip planned around rest as much as wildlife.
What to expect day to day
Pace is everything. We'd suggest at least two nights, ideally three, at each camp so you're not packing every morning. A private vehicle means you choose when to go out and when to stay in: a dawn game drive one day, a slow breakfast and a late start the next.
Many camps can set up a private dinner or breakfast out in the bush, subject to availability and the camp's own arrangements. A hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti at sunrise can be added, subject to availability and the weather.
Comfort levels for couples
Honeymoons often sit at luxury or ultra level, and the reasons are practical: smaller camps, more privacy, tents spaced well apart and staff who have time for you. Camps inside the parks also mean less driving.
That said, a comfort-level route with one or two special nights works beautifully too. A night on the crater rim or a small camp in the Serengeti can be the moment you remember.
Practical considerations
- Season and wedding date: if you marry in April or May, the long rains are worth weighing up. Some camps close, but the parks are green and quiet.
- The beach: Zanzibar's north coast is better for swimming at all tides; the east is quieter but very tidal.
- Tell your camps: we'll let them know it's your honeymoon, and many make a small gesture, though it's never guaranteed.
- Luggage: if you're flying between parks, pack in soft bags within the airline's weight limit.

Questions travellers ask
How long should a honeymoon safari be?
Around ten days to two weeks works well for most couples: five to seven nights on safari and three to five on Zanzibar. That lets you stay two or three nights at each camp rather than moving every day. If you only have a week, focus on one or two parks and a short beach stay rather than trying to cover the whole circuit.
Can we do a balloon flight on our honeymoon?
Hot-air balloon flights over the Serengeti can be added, subject to availability and the weather on the day. They lift off around sunrise, spend about an hour in the air and usually end with breakfast on the plains. Places are limited, especially in the busy months, so mention it early if it's high on your list.
Is the rainy season a bad time for a honeymoon safari?
Not necessarily. The short rains around November usually fall as passing showers, and the green season from December to March is lovely. The long rains in April and May are heavier, and some camps and Zanzibar hotels close, but the parks are quiet and green. If your wedding falls then, choose camps that stay open and keep the plans flexible.
