# Mid-range, luxury or ultra: what changes on a Tanzania safari?

On a Tanzania safari, the comfort level changes where you sleep and how the days are arranged, not where you go. Mid-range trips use comfortable lodges and tented camps, often just outside the parks. Luxury trips use premium camps, more often inside the parks or on the crater rim. Ultra trips use the smallest, most exclusive camps, often reached by light aircraft. The parks, the park rules and the wildlife are the same at every level.

## Three comfort levels, one Tanzania

We plan safaris at three comfort levels. They describe where you sleep and how your days are arranged. They don't change which parks you visit or which animals live there.

- **Comfort:** well-run mid-range lodges and tented camps, chosen for good locations and good value.
- **Luxury:** premium camps and lodges with more space, more attentive service and, often, better positions inside or right beside the parks.
- **Ultra:** the smallest and most exclusive camps, with very few tents, private spaces and the most flexible days.

## What stays the same at every level

This is the part that surprises people. The lion resting on a Serengeti kopje doesn't know which camp you came from.

At every comfort level you visit the same national parks and conservation areas, follow the same park rules and opening hours, and drive the same roads. A mid-range traveller and an ultra traveller on the southern plains in February are watching the same calving herds. The rains fall on both.

What makes a sighting is mostly the season, the guide's judgement and patience. None of those depends on thread count.

## What changes as you move up

### Location

This is the biggest difference, and the one that matters most for your time with wildlife. Mid-range stays are more often just outside park boundaries or in nearby highland areas, such as a lodge on the Ngorongoro highlands near Karatu. Luxury and ultra camps are more often inside the parks or on the crater rim. That can mean earlier time with the animals and less driving each day.

It isn't a strict rule. There are well-placed mid-range tented camps inside the Serengeti, and a good one in the right area beats a grand lodge two hours from the herds.

### Size and atmosphere

Larger lodges can have many rooms, a pool and a busy dining room at dinner. Luxury camps are usually smaller and quieter. Ultra camps may have only a handful of tents, so the staff know your name and your coffee order by the second morning.

### Rooms and bathrooms

Mid-range lodges and tented camps usually have en-suite bathrooms. Some tented camps use safari-style bucket showers, filled with hot water when you ask. At luxury level, expect plumbed showers, more space and often a private deck. Ultra camps add privacy: separate lounges, outdoor showers, sometimes a plunge pool.

### Food and drink

At mid-range lodges, meals are often buffets or set menus, with good, generous cooking. Luxury camps usually offer more choice, and some include house drinks. Ultra camps plan meals around you, from private dinners to breakfast in the bush, and often include a wider range of drinks.

### Vehicles and guiding

A private vehicle isn't reserved for luxury trips. You can travel privately at the comfort level too, and for many travellers it's the single change that improves a safari most. Some ultra camps also run their own game drives with resident guides, which can be a good fit for a longer stay in one area.

### Flights or roads

Higher comfort trips more often use light aircraft between parks. Flying costs more and limits luggage to around 15 kg in most cases, but it can give back a whole day otherwise spent on the road. On a mid-range trip, the drive is part of the experience, and the countryside between the parks is worth seeing.

### Activities

Guided walks, balloon flights and cultural visits can be arranged where permitted and subject to availability. They aren't tied to a comfort level, though some ultra camps include walks or sundowners in the stay.

## A side-by-side view

| | Comfort | Luxury | Ultra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical stay | Mid-range lodges and tented camps | Premium camps and lodges | The smallest, most exclusive camps |
| Usual location | Near park gates or on the highlands | Inside parks or on the crater rim | Prime, often remote positions |
| Camp size | Medium to large | Small to medium | Very small |
| Getting around | Mostly by road | Road or light aircraft | Often light aircraft |
| Meals | Buffets or set menus | More choice, some drinks included | Planned around you |

## How to choose

**Put the upgrade where you spend the most nights.** If you're spending three nights in the Serengeti and one at the crater, that's where a better location will show.

**Mix the levels.** Many of our favourite plans combine a comfortable lodge for a short stop with a luxury camp for the longest stay.

**Think about who's travelling.** Families often prefer lodges with family rooms and a pool, which exist at comfort and luxury level. Honeymooners tend to value privacy, which is where ultra camps shine. See our [honeymoon safari](/experiences/honeymoon-safari) and [family safari](/experiences/family-safari) pages.

**Be honest about budget.** Tell us the range you're comfortable with and we'll show you what it does best. Price is always on request, because it depends on the season, the camps and the number of travellers.

## Questions

### Do you see more wildlife on a luxury safari?

Not because of the price itself. The parks, the animals and the park rules are the same at every comfort level. Luxury and ultra camps are more often inside the parks or on the crater rim, which can mean less driving and earlier time with the animals. A well-located mid-range camp can deliver the same sightings, so location matters more than the label.

### What is the difference between a lodge and a tented camp?

A lodge is a permanent building, usually with solid walls, more rooms and facilities such as a pool. A tented camp uses large canvas tents on platforms, typically with beds and an en-suite bathroom, and feels closer to the bush. Both exist at every comfort level. The most exclusive camps are usually tented and very small.

### Can I have a private vehicle on a mid-range safari?

Yes. A private vehicle and guide are not limited to luxury trips, and for many travellers it is the most useful change they can make. It means the day runs at your pace, you stay at sightings as long as you like, and the vehicle is set up for your group. Tell us your preference when you plan.

### Is it worth mixing comfort levels on one safari?

Often, yes. Many travellers stay at a comfortable lodge for a one-night stop, such as near Tarangire or on the Ngorongoro highlands, and spend more on the camp where they stay longest, usually in the Serengeti. That puts the budget where it makes the biggest difference to your days.
