## About this journey

## The shape of the trip

Three days, two nights and two quite different parks. Tarangire comes first, about 2 to 3 hours west of Arusha: dry woodland, baobabs, the Tarangire River and, in the dry months, big gatherings of elephants along it. You get an afternoon game drive there and another the next morning.

Then the road climbs onto the Ngorongoro highlands, where the air turns cool. On the last morning you drive down into Ngorongoro Crater, spend the best hours on the crater floor and are back in Arusha by evening.

## Why it works as a short safari

Both parks sit off the same road, so the time goes on wildlife rather than transfers. There are no internal flights, and the longest drive is the 3 to 4 hours back to Arusha on the final afternoon. That makes it a good fit after a Kilimanjaro climb, before a week on the coast, or when you only have a long weekend.

The trade-off is simple. There's no Serengeti on this trip. If the Serengeti matters to you, the [5-day classic safari](/safaris/5-day-classic-tanzania-safari) starts the same way and adds two nights there.

## Comfort and luxury versions

As written, this is a comfort-level safari. You sleep in a mid-range tented camp or lodge near Tarangire, then in a mid-range lodge in the Karatu area of the highlands. The vehicle is private either way, so you decide how long to stay at a sighting.

On the luxury version you move to a smaller camp inside or beside Tarangire and a lodge or camp on the crater rim. The rim stay is the change you'll notice most. You wake up a short drive from the descent road instead of starting out from Karatu.

## When to go

Tarangire is at its best in the dry season, roughly June to October, when the river is the main water for miles and animals crowd along it. January and February are good too. In the long rains, around April and May, much of Tarangire's wildlife spreads out onto the surrounding plains and some tracks turn muddy.

The crater holds wildlife all year. It's the steadier half of the trip. For a month-by-month view, read [best time to visit Tanzania](/travel-guide/best-time-to-visit-tanzania).

## Day by day

### Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire

Your driver-guide meets you at your Arusha hotel after breakfast. The road heads west across farmland and Maasai grazing country, and you reach the Tarangire gate in about 2 to 3 hours, in time for lunch. The afternoon is a game drive along the Tarangire River. In the dry months elephants come down to drink and dig in the riverbed for water. The baobabs along the banks are hard to miss: huge grey trunks, often scarred where elephants have stripped the bark. Lions often rest in the shade near the river. You leave the park before the gate closes and drive to your camp.

- Meals: Lunch, Dinner
- Driving: about 2 h 30 min

### Day 2: Tarangire to the Ngorongoro highlands

Morning is the best time in Tarangire, so you go out early, while the light is soft and animals are on the move. Your guide may head back to the river or further into the park, depending on recent sightings. After lunch you drive about 2 to 3 hours to the highlands, passing through Mto wa Mbu and climbing the Rift Valley escarpment. The air cools noticeably on the way up. Your lodge is in the Karatu area, among coffee farms and green hills, and the evening is yours.

- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
- Driving: about 2 h 30 min

### Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater and back to Arusha

An early breakfast, then up to the crater rim and down the descent road onto the floor. Ngorongoro is a volcanic caldera, its grassland ringed by steep forested walls, and most of its animals live there all year: buffalo, wildebeest and zebra, with lions and spotted hyenas never far away. A small population of black rhino lives here too. You may see one, though it's usually at a distance. Your guide works around Lake Magadi, the Lerai Forest and the hippo pool before a picnic lunch on the floor. In the early afternoon you climb out and drive back to Arusha, about 3 to 4 hours from the rim.

- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
- Driving: about 4 h

## Questions

### Is three days enough for a safari in Tanzania?

It's enough to see a lot, as long as the route stays tight. Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater sit off the same road west of Arusha, so most of your time goes on game drives rather than transfers. What you give up is the Serengeti, which is too far to do well in three days by road. If you can find two more days, the 5-day classic safari includes it.

### Can we finish at Kilimanjaro International Airport for a flight home?

Yes, if your flight leaves in the evening. You spend the last morning on the crater floor, then the drive back takes about 3 to 4 hours from the rim. Your guide can drop you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) instead of an Arusha hotel. Send us your flight time before you book it, so we can check the day works.

### Is this safari suitable for children?

Usually, yes. The drives are short by safari standards and there's no flight. Children tend to do well in the crater because the animals are out on open grassland, easy to see. Some camps set their own minimum age, so tell us your children's ages when you enquire. The early start on the last day is the hardest part for young children.
